Extinction Event for David
This was a comic I worked on in 2002 I think. Not my best work. But a more typical comic book style. The story was about sentient Dromeosaurs that saw the end coming (giant meteor) and built cryofreezer things for them and their civilization. They were supposed to unfreeze after a few hundred years but the machine took some damage and didn't unfreeze until a small earthquake 'fixed' the problem. I don't really remember much more, I had some problem with the story and the science, which were changed for the proposal but the writer decided to put them back in. It might have been cool, but once again they had to focus on the people;)
I had to bitch at the colorists after that green Dromeosaur thing on cover 2. They couldn't pull off anything but green and brown so no cool colors. Just remember I had to draw 22 pages of this stuff on a short amount of time so be gentile;)
Best,
Brett
i actually REALLY liked your art for this one...
ReplyDeletewhich is the ONLY reason i bought an issue or two (the ones with the big dino army battle... which ever those were in).
everything else was awful. i'm taking particular aim at the writer...
it is funny how dinosaur related comics are the only ones i'll buy just for the art. i ended up with frank cho's Shanna for the dinosaurs (though writing it himself, he at least could make sure the dinos were "natural", and thus more appealling to buy... the story was equally as stupid as this one's).
normally i buy comics for the writing.
anyways thanks for sharing. i had been wondering if i owed an books by yourself (my comics are currently on the other side of the world from me... so i can't check). now i know i do. if only it were a better series :( (though i'm sure i have at least one more book with your great art).
Argh... was too interesting. Spent hours on replying: drip.de
ReplyDeleteTraumador,
ReplyDeleteIt was better than my irst attempt, Backlash and Taboo's African Holiday. Ugh.
One of the companies I do work for was trying to get the JP license years ago. The wife and I had actually plotted out a story for it, a pack of Allosaurs escape (they have built a park in Florida) and havok ensues. IF we ever do get to do that I'llhave to make sure I play up the pack part just to piss of Andrea Cau;) But alas, Universal kept upping the price. I've heard talks of a new trio of movies being made so you never know. I had tried to get Marvel to do something with the Savage land and the X-men Collosuses' son but never heard back. And then of course there is always Devil Dinosaur. Maybe someday I'll get of fmy ass and do an Age of Reptiles type thing.
David,
I see that. Really nice. I wish I had you're wrtiting ability. I can plot but making things make sense, not my thing. I'll have to check out that new Stout book, I love his backgrounds!
Best,
Brett
i would kill a few hadrosaurs to see you do a devil dinosaur book!!!
ReplyDeletethat would be a fun series, age of reptiles style devil... too bad avengers intiatvie brought back moon boy (i hate the little monkey SO much!!!)
Traumador,
ReplyDeleteI doubt it will ever happen but I might be up for it. I never read the original stuff, not a Kirby fan, but they have to bring characters back every 10 years or so for copyright purposes. Maybe I'll get lucky and be working with Marvel and they need an artist for a new DD book. Moon boy... cough, cough, lame, cough.;)
Best,
Brett
I'll be nice because you've illustrated more dinosaurs in comics than I have...
ReplyDeleteHi Fanboy Wife,
ReplyDeleteI actually did another comic with dinosaurs, but the dinosaurs are even worse so I won't mention it;)
I may try to do another dinosaur book at some point. But that's only at the very beginning stages of an idea.
Best,
Brett
